why? just why? heaves

Why?

So went out to see my mares this am after not having been out for about 2 weeks because of vacation, then I was really sick, and then a couple of days trying to adjust back to school schedule and such with kids. Got out this morning and went to get them an immediately noticed Shelby(paint mare) was wheezing. So I called my sister and told her I had a bad feeling...she told me just keep and eye on her, then I noticed she had some liquid stool coming out, and after I took her fly sheet off she was struggling so much you could see her lungs pushing up against her skin and her abdomen pulling in badly. So called the vet and by some miracle they had a vet who had an opening this morning so I didnt get charged an emergency farm visit. Anyway, she has heaves. They gave her a steroid injection today and over the next 20 days needs to be tapered off of it. At that point we should know whether or not she will need a low dosage daily for maintenance or not. Ugh. I am glad I went out though because my sister, who owns the property, is out of state for work and the people who give the horses hay and stuff while they are going aren't really good at paying attention to that sort of thing.

But like...why? everytime I think we have had enough bad stuff happen in the past 2 years something else happens that sucks.

Oh man so sorry to hear :( I hope she feels better!
I had a similar situation with my old horse. He had allergic asthma and his wheezing would get so bad in the summer (the vet figured he was allergic to some sort of plant in the field) so he had to be on meds during summer, or penned during the day.
