*Can't see support/no support before voting

#191171 Posted on 2018-10-09 09:19:10

Similar to how polls are now, players shouldn't be able to see how much support a suggestion has before they vote. I have noticed it impacting on my decisions of voting before and it isn't fair how quickly a suggestion's support can escalate or deescalate due to the numbers that players can see before they vote. I think that implementing this will create a fairer suggestions system on EV - and will help with the development of the game. In real elections, members of the public can't see how many votes each candidate has before they cast their vote.

I support this, but there is always a possibility to change your vote anyway, so I don't know how to solve this. However I believe that after voting it's much smaller chance that someone will change their decision just because of seeing votes of others.

I'm against supporting this because if I don't want to vote, I just want to see what people think of something, then I want to be able to see the votes without voting myself.

I agree with Dragonfly .... because Im a nosy person! And secrecy is often more damaging than transparency.

But in regard to your reason why you want it hiding I personally dunno how you would let the number of votes sway you on something.... you can form your own opinion about a subject & vote accordingly (assuming you actually read the full forum topic & not just blindly read a title only & copy whichever option has the most votes) but then again Im not a sheeple! :)

in regards to what dragonfly said, maybe there can be a button in the middle for members who don’t care either way or don’t know yet

I don't think there are that many people with that kind of bias that would choose just yes or no solely based on just what is more popular at the moment, I would have to agree with Khatir on that. I already guessed from just reading topics and other users comments around the this site that my last suggestion may not be as well received and these posts were all from people who didn't have numbers in front of them to persuade for or against it. I still wanted to try however, just to see if there were at least a few that also thought this would be an improvement, but there are more that don't and I am fine with that.

I support this because all people are affected by seeing the votes, whether they know it or not. It doesn't make us "sheeple," it makes us human. This is coming from someone who majored in psychology, by the way. People are only saying they're not "sheeple" because they're afraid to come across as malleable, when we all are malleable to some degree (though of course the degree varies). However, the ability to see things from others' points of view is a good thing; it reflects flexibility, a good quality, and is the opposite of something to be ashamed of. But the number of votes a suggestion has isn't exactly an objective way through which to base a decision on, so it makes more sense to encourage members to fully read through a thread (isn't that what the person calling others "sheeple" wanted, anyway?)

I've thought several times about making this suggestion myself, based on my study of psychology. It's not the biggest deal, but it would help give a better view of what people on Equiverse would really like to see. I strongly support this suggestion and hope others have the flexibility to give it a thought, too.

Edited to add - If you want to know how people voted that badly, just vote one way or the other and see what the count is. Then you can read the post/other comments and switch your vote if needed. Why is this helpful? Because though people can easily change their vote, it takes effort that it otherwise would not take, and it would indeed make some amount of people not change their vote again because they can't be bothered. These are likely to be psychologically overloaded people who would have voted with the crowd just to get their voice heard, but now have been forced to have their own opinion instead.

I'd also like to have a neutral/don't care option. It'd give an estimate of how many people care about the idea, as well as give those 'needing' to see how the votes swing an option that doesn't tilt the vote to one side or the other.

@Syrien EXACTLY! A human being is always susceptible for other's suggestion, in a different degree, but still.

I’m unsure on this one, so i didn’t vote either way.
I typically just vote for suggestions that i feel may fit EV, regardless of how popular or unpopular it is.

I disagree with having a neutral option personally, I think the amount of people voting is a good enough measure of how neutral or invested people are on a subject (more people = more care about the suggestion being added or not), and I don't feel that a neutral would promote any kind of decision making or discussion about the suggestion.

Slightly diverging from the suggestion but similar- I've always wondered if suggestions should be anonymous or not for a completely impartial/unbiased voting. Though comments would probably reveal who suggested it if they were overly defensive. I've noticed certain people attract more attention/vehement debates in the past regardless of suggestion, and personal experience with a player can affect how people vote as well.

Anyway, I like the idea of hiding votes until voting is done. It's no different from polls etc. It'd also help to know which suggestions you've voted on or not in the voting board if you can only see the results of what you've voted on (the suggestions you've supported list gets rather long to look at).

As someone who plays a relatively self-contained and not mainstream way, I don't vote in a lot of suggestions that won't impact the way I play in general, since I'm not sure if it would be a good addition/change for the game as a whole, but I like to see what way people are voting because it shows me what's important to other players.  If support is always hidden, and there's no way to see it without choosing a side as a whole, people who are curious but don't actually have any skin in the game will be made to feel left out or forced to pick a side on an issue they might not actually understand the impact of, which can skew the actual support of impacted players.  If support is hidden, I would agree to a "Results" or "Neutral" option for those of us who want to know but aren't certain on voting.

Maybe there could be an option to unhide the votes for people who are interested in how a topic is trending but don't actually want to vote? I agree that having the total number of "Support" and "Not Support" votes already visible before I've even read the proposition is not good voting form.
