Only The Strong Survive

Ahanu
He didn't stop until they reached the hut again. A quick glance around showed him where his stick had landed, and he picked it up. The ladder came down easily after he hooked it and pulled. Ahanu gestured for Charity to go ahead and climb. 

Charity
Charity looked up at the deck, then mumbled "Thanks, by the way," before she climbed up and headed straight for her bed.

Ahanu
He climbed up when she had reached the top. Upon reaching the deck, he pulled the ladder up and tucked it away where it belonged. He glanced up to see she had gone into the hut. With a sigh, he stood and walked to the doorway, not going inside. "Whenever you're ready to talk, I'll be out here." He turned and found a spot by the rail, out of sight from the hut doorway, and sat down. He put Andie and Bambi down so they could play, making sure they weren't too close to the edge. 

Auberon
Auberon watched Ahanu and Charity for a moment, then went over to where Ahanu was. "What happened?"

Ahanu
He shook his head. "Honestly? I don't even know for sure yet." He ran his hand through his hair, which he had forgotten to put back into a hair tie after combing it out. "We went into town and ran into someone. She said she's your sister, but hinted at being dead? I don't know. Anyway, she's been stalking Charity. Apparently Charity left the shelter last night and went for a walk - did you know about that? That girl said something about Charity talking to herself." Ahanu looked at his rats, gently relocating them away from the edge where they had tumbled close to. 

Auberon
Auberon sat down next to Ahanu. He glanced down at the rats thoughtfully. "Well, no, I didn't know she went out, though I'm not surprised. If she's talking to herself, I'm not surprised by that either. As for the girl-" Auberon tapped his foot on the ground quietly, his eyes getting slightly distant. "-she had blonde hair and blue eyes, pretty annoyingly mean, and likes to play with fire?"

Ahanu
"Yeah, that's her." Ahanu pulled some blueberries from his pocket. He had seen them in the woods and plucked them off the bush as he passed by. He handed one to each rat, dumping the rest in a pile between them.

Auberon
"Oh. Yeah, that's Eudora. I killed her like... a year ago," Auberon mumbled. "If you see her again just throw something at her until she gets sick of you." He shrugged it off as if it weren't a big deal. "Did she say what Charity was talking about?"

Ahanu
He had hoped to avoid this. "Yeah. I want to talk to Charity about it, though." Wow, I managed to keep my voice from breaking. 

Auberon
Auberon hummed in annoyance, his eyes fluttering closed. "I wish Kahlen were here..." he murmured. He stood up and walked back into the hut, grabbing something then going back out and swinging the ladder down. "I'll be back," he told Ahanu, then slid down and threw the ladder back up.

Ahanu
"Uh, yeah, okay," Ahanu muttered in response. He sighed and watched his rats play. Bambi got tired of it and sauntered back over toward Ahanu. "Are you okay, Bambi? Are you sick? Or just lazier than Andie?" Ahanu picked up the rat and gently examined her, looking for any signs she was ill.

Charity
Charity watched Auberon leave, then curled up in her bed. Unfortunately, she was feeling super cold, and nothing was making her feel warmer. 

Ahanu
His inspection resulted in a perfectly healthy, though somewhat plump, rat. "So you're just a lazy girl." He pet her before setting her back down. Bambi squeaked with indignance when Andie tackled her. Ahanu smiled a little. They hadn't finished all the blueberries, and while Bambi wanted to go set about doing that, all Andie wanted was to play.

Charity
Charity shivered, closing her eyes while hoping to ease her headache. She replayed last night's events, the thought of it all making her feel colder. What was she supposed to even say to Ahanu at this point? If she could, she would've just forgotten it all happened and gone on with life as it was.

Ahanu
He scooped his rats up, along with the berries, and crossed to the hut. He didn't like how close to the edge they were. He entered, crossing to his bed, where he deposited the rats. Bambi dove for the blueberries as soon as he set them down. Andie still wanted to play, so she tackled the corner of the pillow. Ahanu would have to try and make her some toys to play with. He glanced over at Charity. She was shivering. He took the blanket off his bed. As he headed for the door of the hut, he paused by her cot and put his blanket on top of her. Ahanu would have to have Auberon make sure she wasn't sick when he got back. He turned and headed for the hut door.
