Indoor Riding Arena

#10750 Posted on 2016-02-26 22:13:02

Does anyone have their own indoor arena or ride in one? What is your footing and base? What type of building do you have? What would you change? What do you love about it? Has anyone used MAG for dust control?

We're planning an indoor and would love reviews. We are in the Canadian prairies so need something that can stand up to the cold and wind! My boyfriend and I ride Western, but I will be taking English, and in the future jumping lessons.

I don't remember what the footing was at the old arena.

Everywhere I've been just used a sprinkler system to control dust.

Vos- are you in an area that freezes? If yes, do you know what they did to prevent frozen footing?

We can get pretty cold here. I believe that at least one place had ac/heating in the barn. That helped a little bit.

The few I have been in were not heated (cold snowy Minnesota aka almost Canada). Most had a mostly dirt w/sand mix. I do not know what the base was but would assume it may have been crushed rock to help with drainage. A few also had wood chip shavings but I was not a fan of that. I don't think it ever froze hard like outside would, even without heat.

i'm not sure what we have at Lettleiki, but one of my barns before that had Kiser natural footing. it was virtually dust-free, even during barrel racing events.

We have an indoor where I work. It's open on one side (towards the east). We have a masonry sand and a felt/fiber mixed in. We have an overhead sprinkler system, but being in Texas we rarely have to worry about frozen footing. The overhead system drains itself after it's turned off so I don't have to worry about the pipes themselves freezing. We use it for show jumping and dressage.

Thanks everyone for your input! I think we are going to go with a sand/rubber mix and most likely MAG for dust control. I acquired some fairly serious lung problems from the dust at a place we used to board so dust control is very important to us!

Crazy Angel - I actually found that Kiser footing online and fell in love with it. Texas to Canada is a long haul for footing though :(
