A terrible wind storm and rescue

#96503 Posted on 2017-03-06 11:25:08

On March 5, 2017, an awful windstorm struck Utah in Beaver County. At my little farm, the wind was racing at 60-80 mph! I went to church that day and when I came home I was in absolute shock. The entire roof had been ripped off my dads shed. I ran inside to change out of my dress and rushed back out to find a horrifying sight. The roof had landed inside my horse/pony corral, on my favorite horse. I rushed over to see my childhood pony lying under a heap of tin and wood. When she saw me coming she struggled to get up, thrashing around wildly in her attempts. I rushed over to her head and calmed her down by stroking her and talking gently to her. When she was calm enough for me to leave I ran over to my dad's workshop and grabbed a chainsaw.( I have never operated a chainsaw before) I remember watching my dad start it before and tried to do the same. My plan was to cut the wood around her to make it possible for me to lift everything off of her. I failed to start the chainsaw. I then remembered my mom was in the house, I knew that She could start the chainsaw. I ran to the house and hollered to my mom, "Hurry Mom Midnight's trapped and I need you to use the Chainsaw!!!". My sister had already run in and told her she was under the roofing. My mom told me to calm down and that dad was on his way.(he was at church) She told me over and over to take a deep breath and calm down. At this point, I was Hyperventilating and shaking violently. I kept thinking that we wouldn't be able to act fast enough and she would be crushed to death or anything like that. I suddenly got the thought of using a car jack to lift the roof. I ran over to the blue truck and launched myself into the back grabbing the jack. As I was sprinting back to the corral I noticed my dad pulling into our driveway. I went back to midnight and began to stroke and calm her again. My dad ran over with the rest of my family and we all tried to lift the roof. we couldn't get it high enough. My dad grabbed the chainsaw and cut some of the wood around her. He then ran over and grabbed an empty trough, dragged it over and told me to slide it under when they lifted. I did what I was told and we were able to release some stress on her. We did the same on the other side of her but with some logs. At this point, midnight was able to roll up so that she wasn't on her side. I then ran to the horse trailer where we keep our tack and fought with the wind to get the door open. I grabbed her halter and her lead rope. Then I rushed back and put it on her so that I could help encourage her to get out. My family then tried again to lift it higher and I pulled on Midnight's lead rope and said to her, " Common girl, common. You can do it, let's go sweet girl." she then Began to crawl out and soon stood. It was such a miracle that she made it out with only minor scratches and bruises. Both of her eyes are swollen from thrashing her head back in forth in attempts to escape, but She has been acting normally since the accident and she is receiving special attention daily. Here is a picture of her. this is before the accident.

We used to do horse rescue, and I remember some pretty horrific conditions, my parents worked in. Whether it was horrid conditions the horse(s) were in, or poor weather conditions during driving home. We've seen a lot.

I'm so happy she's alright, and glad you got her out safely.

I'm glad things ended up positive.

We had two deadly tornadoes in the past week. Tornadoes are super uncommon around here, so it was a bit of a shock. Luckily the horses only got a flash storm and some strong winds.
