Managing Breeding Pairs

#94226 Posted on 2017-02-19 22:29:46

Hi all

I've been an Equiverse member since 2009, but I've been gone for a long time and only recently come back :)

I was hoping for some advice on how people manage and keep track of their breeding pairs these days, particularly when starting from foundation horses?

I had a line of foundation breeding pairs before I left and now I'm at the stage where I'm up to 2nd or 3rd generation with most pairs and I'm finding it a bit tricky to keep track of who to breed to who.

If anyone has some advice or strategies it would be much appreciated. I started a basic spreadsheet recently but I can't get my head around how it's going to pan out long term.

First off, I mark my pairs with some maching symbol before there name, when I decide pairs, that helps me keep track of who to breed to who. Keep with the same set bred together, instead of mixing and matching stallions and mares, and it should be fairly easy if you only keep one foal from each horse. You just have to check the pedigree of the horses you are looking to buy for your own horses.

Sonoma uses I (foundation), II (second generation), etc.

Kazirim Park names all their foals with the same initial as the foal's sire...for example:
Karizim Park Tabitha's father is Karizim Park Taco, whose father is Karizim Park Traditional, etc. etc.
