Horsey Updates

Some updates on the horses.
I'll be making an entirely separate post about Shawn, as everything with him will be very detailed. Don't worry it's all good stuff.
First of all we shall show embarrassing pictures of Mack. Well, embarrassing for him anyways.

Also you get to see what I look like without makeup, dresses, and such on. These are my everyday barn clothes, and general look when I got out to Tractor Supply, pet stores, vets offices, etc.

So, let me explain why Mack is wearing a Neon Pink halter with polka dots. Long story short I forgot his usual purple halter upstairs in my room, and I was already outside at the barn. So, I just decided to use Rosie's new halter on him. It took a lot of adjustments, but in the end it was a perfect fit.

Mack was just happy for the attention, as he stood perfectly still, which is very unlike him. He usually is a pain to handle when you're adjusting a new halter on him.

Rosie was my second victim model for a new halter. I found a new Christmas halter in a tack box last week; that I'd bought for her a few years ago. So, I decided to put it on and have dad takes some pictures. She wasn't embarrassed and loved the attention.

....

Some people were curious about the fact that Mack has false dun markings. Particularly, a prominent dorsal stripe. So, here's a picture

...

Poor Chance trying to tolerate the fact that Copper is licking him. Copper does this at least 4+ times a day to all of the horses. He loves them a little too much lol.

I love comments, so please comment lol. Oh, and feel free to post pictures of you embarrassing your pets.

Omg they are all so cute! I love little Chance, he has an impressive mane on him, and those tiny legs.... I don't have any horses yet, but I probably will within the next couple of years.

I'm an unobservant doofus... wonder if Mack would test positive for nd1... huh. Good to see everyone doing well :)

@RemRem: Thank you! Yeah, Chance is a sweetheart, and one of our rescues from when we did animal rescue actively. We knew when we met him that we'd keep him. His mane and tail is super long, and tends to not need brushing very often.

@vos: lol I would've thought you'd known, with you being the color genetic person. His legs only have very faint striping, but it's there if you look close enough. They're nearly impossible to see with his winter coat though, so maybe in late spring, or early summer I'll take some pictures. His dorsal stripe goes all the way into his tail. I have ever thought about testing him, since Haflingers aren't supposed to carry Dun. But, his sire and grand sire both had dun markings as well; so I wouldn't necessarily be surprised. Yeah, all the horses are doing well.
The other animals have a whole load of issues. Everyone besides The cats, Cody, Copper, and Lacy are getting up there in age.
Scooby has congestive heart failure, is deaf, and has cataracts (he's 14.5 yrs now).
Pumpkin appears to have developed hip dysplasia, or something else. We need to get her to the vet to be looked at.
Copper has an ear infection that we've been trying to treat for over a month. They've sent some swabs to the GA Veterinary School, to see if they can tell us why its not going away.
Little Bear, well technically he's not got anything really wrong with him. As he still acts like a puppy. Though, he has bad cataracts in both eyes, is completely deaf, and according to the vet has a prominent heart murmur. Other than that he's very healthy for a 16 year old dog.
Kiara is doing good and recovering from her surgery nicely.
Ginger is well, not terrible but not great. It's a long story.

But, other than all of that, everyone is doing good.

@Siren: Thanks, I have a slight addiction to buying cute halters for the horses. Oh, and costumes, browbands, jewelry, feathers, etc. They get more gifts than I do on Christmas. We literally have stockings in the house for the horses, dogs, and cats. We're a little crazy lol. It seems to be a thing with Chestnuts and Chestnut based horses. Mack has always had the markings ever since we got him when he was a 3 year old. Now he's around 13-14 years old, and they're most prominent in summer.

Just realized I forgot to post a picture of Sidekick lol. Well, I'll have to snatch my dad's phone again, since the pictures are on it. You think Chance's mane is long, you should see his.

Considering he's a Hafie, I wouldn't be surprised if he came back positive for nd1 then. Siren, you might be interested, too. If only for the information.

Non-dun primitive markings can sometimes be attributed to a more recently-mapped allele on the dun locus named not-dun 1.

Dun (D) is expressed as a diluted coat and at least a dorsal stripe (a dorsal from the dun gene clearly runs through the tail, it doesn't stop at the dock).

Not-dun 1 (nd1) is expressed as an undiluted coat with primitive markings (slight dilution may occur with homozygous nd1nd1 horses, as well as having stronger primitives). This is what is found in Andalusians and Lusitanos; not actual dun.

Nod-dun 2 (nd2, formerly d) is an undiluted horse with no primitives (could still potentially have false primitives from something like sooty).

---

Can't expect everything to go smoothly 100% of the time huh? At least you're doing MOSTLY well.
