I dont know if it's intentional or not, but I would lighten the tail, add highlights, low lights and midtones to give it more life. It over all looks too flat comparative to the shading on the body. Jet black for large areas like that is rarely a good idea as it ends up looking like a block or silhouette, and you want to make it pop. :)

I have no idea how to shade whatsoever, but make sure you grayscale it before coloring- just adding dark marks on top of the color makes it messy, and I preferred the unshaded version.

keep practicing you shading, you will get it :)
(Just an artist comment: never use black or white for a base color. use a really dark grey and a really light grey. You can't shade black, and you cant lighten white.)

There are two ways to shade: greyscale and color shading. Greyscale is used a lot here for tags and such. I personally do color shading, which is just using a darker color to shade and a lighter color to highlight. but with a complex design like this, a greyscale would work best. There are plenty of tutorials out there that can show you how :)

I like the colors, and mardi gras is a good idea! The shape of the mane and tail is really nice! better than mine lol just practice the shading :)

I use pure black and pure white for my shading and highlighting. You just have to know the methods to make it work. Coming from an artist.

i personally dont like shading on references. It makes it hard to get the proper colors you intend for the design unless you have a color palette.
But tutorials help loads :3 i like the theme.
