Question to hook them in. Like "Have you ever wondered..."

Or a statistic.

Hmm I like "Have you ever wondered..." Thanks Jezarae!!!

@Zest its a comparison essay on two different articles on why the government should invest more money into the daycare/early education programs.

It really depends on the rubric and your grade. I tend to use a quote or a imagine statement.

Opening paragraphs are generally considered a summary of your essay. If you're having trouble writing it, get the meat and bones of your paper done first and then write the opening paragraph last. From there, you can edit and trim down, if needed.

not sure if i am too late.
i learned in the english class that the opening statement, could include could a generalization of your idea, ask a question(dont say 'you', teachers hate that) ect. but the opening should lead the person into whatever you are writing about or at least pertain to your idea without going into detail like you will later in the essay.
this is the hooker, so if you can say something dramtic then do it. it makes the person want to continue reading.

it really depends on what type of essay you are writing but i hope this helps!

i also agree with the person above who said maybe go back after you're fiinished writing. but i ususally with prove the facts i stated in the opening statemnt to use as material for the wrest of the essay.

i pulled out my trusty book from that english class way back freshman year of college

Intro:
1-3 sentences of intro using a question, quote; get readers attention; generalized idea of topic to be discussed; reads into topic sentence
the last sentence of the introduction should be the topic sentence; it takes the generalized idea from the rest of the intro, but narrows it down the main topic which will easily guide into the body of your essay...

sorry for rambling :p

(my school beat MLA writing into our heads, opening body paragraphs and the conclusion.)
