Breeding for colors

#270282 Posted on 2023-09-06 07:02:14

Hii everyone!

I usually breed for NSS and confo only, but I started a new project with driving Clydesdales. I want them to have a Budweiser Clydesdale look. No sabino, a blaze and 4 stockings. I know I can get rid of the sabino through breeding but I don't know how markings work. Do the markings of the ancestors of the horse have an inlfuence or is it completely random?

If the markings can be influenced by breeding, how so?

Thanks for the response ♥

there's always a chance for markings to be passed down but i doubt it's ever even close to 100%. in my experience breeding 2 horses with lots of white together often results in foals with plenty of markings too. breeding 2 horses without markings can result in foals without any (though i've seen they often end up with at least one marking anyway with these kinds of pairings).

i've even had foals inherit all their parents markings combined, this stallion got all 3 of his dam's leg markings and his sire's face + leg marking, down to the exact placement and type of marking they had. it's pretty uncommon to get a result like that but it's happened to me a few times.

so basically, it's random but it feels like there's a higher chance of foals inheriting their parents markings + possibly a slightly increased chance of getting a similar marking? and there will always be a chance of something completely different from the parents entirely.

the best way would probably be to pair up foundations with lots of markings together, maybe similar to the example above where the mare and stallion had each other's "missing" leg markings. but you can still get foals with markings from parents who have no markings, and you can breed bigger markings from small ones like getting stockings from socks. it's also entirely possible to breed two horses with 4 stockings each together and get a solid. :p so you'd probably want to breed multiple foals and keep the ones closest to what you're looking for.
