final goodbyes

I know what the title says, I'm not leaving!

So around ten minutes ago I recieved the bad news that the horse I've been riding for five years is going to be put down tomorrow afternoon due to his declining health. However, I will be able to see him tomorrow morning. I need some ideas of things that I can do with him tomorrow. Thank you so much everyone!

Aww, I’m sorry to hear. I suggest just going and chilling with him. If he likes being brushed, brush him. Give him his favourite treats. That sorta stuff.

Oh no, I’m so sorry to hear that. 😢

Like Midnight Outlaw said, spend every moment with him and let the horse know he is loved.

Did they say why he is being put down.

We have always just pet them, brushed them, stuff like that. Also we always cut a braided lock of mane to keep.

Awe sorry to hear :(
Definitely agree with others. Spending as much time with him is the best way.
My horse passed from cancer in March, and before he was put down I had taken him to the garden to get the best grass (The grass in the field was growing slower and he wasn't grazing due to appetite loss), he seemed to really enjoy it as he was finally grazing.
I do also suggest cutting a lock of hair as a keepsake.
Hang in there ♥  -hugs- We're here for you in this tough time

for anyone who's wondering all i was told is that his health was falling apart, but as to what from i have no clue. he is quite old (25-ish), so that's most likely why.

alright sorry for the double post but i wanted to give a little update as i just have gotten back from seeing him one last time.

@siren and @olympea that you for that advice, i was able to get some of his mane as well as his old halter and lead rope

@cherry willows rescue so as i had already stated above that his health was going down, i now have why. so before this whole ordeal during winter (i live in the southwest united states so we don't really have much of a winter, it just gets cooler), bert was doing much better and he had a whole lot of energy, and it wasn't much of a problem to get him moving forward. as the weather started to heat up again going into spring, bert's health started to decline slightly. he had probelms moving forward and it felt as if he was stiff from arthritis (when being ridden) and my trainer tried to combat this by giving him vitamin shots which did help for a bit, but not much. as the weather started getting even hotter, bert would no longer have the willingness to move forward when ridden, and another girl who rode him was also having problems. i'm not sure when this started but over this time bert started losing weight (it was noticed by my dad when he saw him today, and my dad isn't a horse person nor does he have much knowledge of horses). from what my trainer said he had begun having diarrhea that was black and sticky, which was from blood as i was told. they tried changing up his diet to help this, but it wasn't working. the vets were saying that he wasn't getting the nutritional effects from food, as it was just passing through him. vets speculated that he was losing weight because he body was using fat reserves to keep himself alive, as if he was starving. i'm assuming that he has some sort of stomach cancer, and it has just gotten worse to the poiont his stomach doesn't work and it causes him pain to move. i was also told that his kidneys are now failing, another sign that if he has cancer, it's spread. before my trainers found this out they were looking to send him to a pasture for retirement, they had a two vets come and see him but they said that he wouldn't be able to survive winter at pasture (which is in canada).

fun fact, the reason why the pasture they choose was in canada was because his old owners were in canada, and bert used to be owned by some famous equestrian people's son, who used him as his childrens hunter (which usually has jumps around 3' to 3'3"). from what i've been told he was a great hunter, and that's why the family that used to own him wanted him back to allow him to retire in pasture.

once again thank you guys so much for all your support, it really means a lot.

edit: i'll post some pictures from today
