sketch practice (criticism needed)

#174621 Posted on 2018-06-12 17:38:10

hey everyone, i've attempted to draw horses for many years now, and i've finally decided today was the day. i know what i drew was no where near perfect, so i hope i can get some much need criticism on my art to help me improve. my goal is to draw something of a horse (preferably a different shot or pose everyday) post it here, and get advice. i would very much appreciate for people to critique my work and give me tips and tricks to fix specific things, etc. thank you!

6/12/18 - headshot (or a face shot, which i'm not sure exists)

Amazing sketch!! (Just a tiny tip, I'm no expert: just for reference, horse's faces from that angle are slightly diamond shaped, with the top wider and shorter  bottom being longer than the top as well as slightly thinner.) ♥

Check out some 3D horse skeletons (f.eg. on sketchfab) and images with horse muscles. Knowledge of what is under the skin helps a lot in drawing.

I'm also no expert, but I do draw horses a lot in class and at home and have gotten pretty good at it XD I would kind of work on the eyes a little bit. They kind of poke out of the head too much in my opinion. And also try to make the nostrils kind of a teardrop shape. It takes a bit or practice and erasing to make it look good.

Here's an example of the teardrop shape:

It not bad for one of your first skechs, mine were horrible!  The criticism:
The left ear seems lower than the right, and same with the left eye, making it look crooked.
It seems like there is a tad too much shadeing under the right eye.
The lower jaw bone looks crooked.
I hope I wasn't to harsh! ;) if you want, I can post a pic of my first sketch...

Ok, this is actually really really cute! You did pretty good on this lil sketch. I went and redlined it so you can have a general idea of whats what, and hopefully it can be of some help ^.^
