Our New Baby Raccoons!

#172543 Posted on 2018-05-31 19:34:04

The Story:

So as some may know, we take in orphaned baby animals and nurse them to health, raise them, release, etc. So we received a call from a lady that they had shot a raccoon that kept getting into their crops and they had no idea she had babies. The babies were up in a tree and hadn't eaten since Sunday. Which means they hadn't eaten in 4 days. No wonder when we picked them up they wouldn't stop squealing. We made an emergency 30 minute drive to the closest store to buy kitten milk replacer as ours had gone bad and we weren't expecting a call this early in the season.

About the babies:

As we inspected them (to look for fleas or other issues), we did notice that they had fleas, which with a warm bath with some Dawn Dish Soap can help. They are far too young to use Frontline or flea killing shampoo as it can be harmful to them. Also, I think I forgot to mention that there is a total of 2 which is the perfect amount as raccoons can be very expensive. There is one boy and one girl. We named the girl Aurora and the boy Harney. Harney sounds like an odd name at first, but it is actually the name of a 'mountain' of which is in South Dakota, where I live, that we are going to climb called Harney's Peak. Last year we also had a raccoon named Rocky named after Rocky Mountain National Park.

Pictures:

I will add pictures later. My phone is dead and they are sleeping. Disturbed baby raccoons equal noisy baby raccoons. They also just ate and it's not good to disturb them after they eat. I will keep posting pictures here as they get older.

If anyone has any questions, feel free to ask! I'd gladly answer!

How long will you be keeping them before you're releasing them?

@Ducky- They start maturing at around 6 months. We usually keep them in the house/garage until they are around 2 months and then we let them free range outside which we consider as releasing, as they can go wherever they want, but they usually stick around for another year. Some of them leave around the age of 6 months, especially the males that go and look for more territory.

@Midnight- lol that's funny. We actually live around an area called Aurora county. I'm not saying where for safety reasons XD
