Toy Horse Recoloring

#150408 Posted on 2018-02-14 15:51:57

I've seen alot of toy horse recolring around lately, and kindof felt inspiration to try my hand at it. I actually enjoy doing it! I started with a simple charrie, just to get a feel and I was having a blast! I just finished whiting out a few more so I have 6 blank ones to pick from for my next recolor c:

The charrie I chose to try is Spectrum

Step 1 - Whiting out the horses to have a solid base to work with
Step 2 - Starting mane
Step 3
Step 4
Step 5 - All Done!

Front
Back
Left-Face
Right-Face - (I did fixe the spot on his neck after I took the photo xD )

I'm hoping to do some more in my free time and bought more art tools to aid in doing so! I'm so excited to find something artsy to do in my free time ^D^

That looks awesome! If you want a tip on avoiding the brush marks in the paint you can try thinning the paint a little and applying multiple layers, that should help! Also - chalk pastels are really awesome for shading, roaning, or doing the whole thing if you're up to doing lots of layers (make sure to seal with something like Mr. Super Clear when your chalks stop building so that you can build on top of them even more). If you'd like, I have a TON of tutorials bookmarked on how to repaint model horses!

Thanks guys~!

@anathematical ; Thanks for the tips, and I'd love some tutorials! I'm currently just using high quality acrylics paints, but I heard the tips of using chalk pastels (and also eyeshadows but gonna avoid that xD) But any tutorials would be a great help. Some one my charries are far from forgiving on the marking front xD

I've always wanted to get into painting horses. Sadly the only horses I have access to are Breyer models and I'd die before attempting to paint those.

For a first try, yours is really good. But I'd definitely try to get a smoother base to work with next time, and maybe try to work in some shading.

Yeah, worth too much lols. The ones I'm recoloring are cheap off brand Schliechs, or doubles I had laying around.

As far as mine is, I agree on your comments. I don't think the original horse shaping/model helped much for it. It has weird muscling on the body, especially on the hind leg and butt. So it gives a weird look to it.

I used to own Spectrum and redesigned her a little. It's so much fun to see her being made into a model :)
