where to go from here...need help with my foals

#143499 Posted on 2018-01-27 01:56:26

i have these foals, i am wanting my own line and these babies are from the same parents, so how to cull out ones i don't want, and what if i just happen to keep both from the same parents. i want clean lines and this is my first time doing this. i do have others that i will be breeding and adding 6 or 12 that's if i breed 2 times like this first set.

and i just thought of this when breeding your own line is the goal to have a full breeding herd or breed down to one ultimate horse?

How you choose which to keep to breed the next generation depends on what your requirements are/what you're breeding for. For example: I'm predominately breeding for conformation, so I take the best conformed foal from each set of parents. You can have a look at my Constellation Line Gen 1 and their 'rejected' siblings for an example of what I do.

If you have a particular goal, I'd be happy to make suggestions about which foals to keep on/how to pair them up.

Edit: I just quickly went through those foals:

For conformation:
1, 2A, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7A, 8
(1A actually has higher conformation than 1, but 1 has straight Good profile and 1A has a Poor.)

For solid/no sabino:
1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7A, 8

The only one that's different there is 2 vs. 2A which are pretty equivalent for conformation so the solid set shouldn't be too bad for conformation either.

Both these groups are 6:2 Mares:Stallions so you'd need at least two Loki's Daggers. If you don't want to swap any of them you'll need to take two of 1A, 5A, and 7 (1A and 7 would be my recommendation).

(I'm eventually breeding down to an "ultimate" horse, but I started with 128 foundations so it'll need seven generations (= another 3 years) so I'm not worried about running out.)

The solid group should produce all bays too. Most of the crosses will have a chance of solid, except for whichever has 5, the one homozygous SbSb. :) If you want some help actually pairing them up, I'm happy to help.
