I lost my best friend

#133702 Posted on 2017-12-13 20:35:50

Exciting news, everyone! All the paperwork for my ESA has finally been approved and today I got to meet my new girl.

Poppy is an (approximately) 4 year old pit mix (pit as in bully breed... I have no idea if she is APBT).

She is currently severely underweight and is missing quite a bit of hair, I am assuming due to mange. She was found as a stray, but is incredibly sweet.

I’ve had to order the poor thing a coat as she barely has any fur and absolutely no fat, and it’s currently about -7.

I’ll be picking her up tomorrow and making the five hour drive home with her. Unfortunately her kennel doesn’t fit in the backseat of my car, so I’m going to try a harness and seatbelt instead. I’m not too worried, though, as she has an incredibly calm demeanor. If anyone has any tips for the car ride please share!

She's gorgeous! I might get a staffy or staffy mix as my ESA, some time in the next year or so (there's a never ending amount at the local rescues). Though, I'm most wanting a Border Collie or Collie mix. But, best of luck with your beautiful girl, and be sure to update us as she blossoms into a new dog as she heals.

Good luck Sib! Let me know if you have any questions.

I will say that if you’re getting an ESA for a college environment, pits and collies are not always going to be ideal. Every dog is different, of course, but demeanor should come before breed, especially in this kind of environment. High energy dogs would be a big challenge, at least where I am living.

I found Poppy by talking with several shelters and explaining my situation and needs to them. They were then able to tell me which dogs would best fit me. If you can speak with someone who’s fostered the dog, that’s even better!

I will absolutely continue to update ♥

She is soooo cute and looks even sweeter!! My boyfriend has pitbull and she is the sweetest dog in existence. They're wonderful. ♥ Best of luck to both of you as you heal together.

Poppy is home! After throwing up in my backseat (xP) she did exceptionally on the 5 hour car ride--slept nearly the whole way.

I was initially concerned at her interactions with the family dog, but they're getting along just fine now.

She is currently curled up in bed next to me, snoring and twitching away.

she is adorable!

i feel terrible though for not seeing this sooner because i was gonna suggest getting one of those backseat hammocks that protects your seat we have one for our dog and its because he always throws up in the car and gets his white hair all over my black seats XD totally worth the $14 they usually are (:

and glad to hear everything is going good, we rescued kiwi three years ago and he is the best dog we could've ever wanted and we took him over buying a purebred aussie shep pup (:

Update:

I just got home from the vet. I had to put my 9 year old dog down after she attacked him and ruptured both of his eyes. They had seemed to be getting alone just fine and were playing when she grabbed him.

If I am not active in the next few days, this is why. I am absolutely heartbroken and sick that I let this happen. My little dog was my absolute best friend growing up and today was the hardest day of my life. I’m not sure what will happen to Poppy now. She is currently with a friend.

Oh my god! I am so sorry. You didn't let that happen. You cant always predict how a dog is gonna act.

Thanks guys. I’m still in shock. The whole thing was very bloody and horrific.

I didn’t know it was possible to cry this hard for so long.

Harley is being cremated and we will get his pawprint. I got to say goodbye, and I am thankful for that.

Before anyone asks, he was not put down simply because of his eyes. By the time he got to the vet, he had lost the majority of his blood and was in shock. Additionally, he had brain swelling and his pressures and hematocrit were critically low. Had we opted to take him to the emergency vet, he probably wouldn’t have survived the car ride.

My heart breaks for Poppy. I was told upon adopting her that she was great with other dogs as long as they were not intact. She had seemed to be getting along with Harley just fine. My family is requesting that she be put down, but I am going to stop by the shelter tomorrow to find out the options.

As much as I don’t want this to happen to another dog, perhaps she could do well in an only-pet home. She is just incredibly sweet toward people.

I can’t even explain the extent of the guilt I feel. I’m devastated. And if I have to put another dog down within 24 hours, I think it will break me.

Jasmine, I don't even know what to say except that I am so sorry and there is no way you could have known. You, your family, Poppy and Harley-in-Heaven are all in my prayers.
