Thoroughbred Club: July Discussion

#111557 Posted on 2017-06-27 22:00:42

Hello All!

There are a few different things happening right now and I wanted to get a club discussion going for the next month.  This should make it easier for members to discuss with each other and help me keep responses all in one place.

July Club Championships

First off, please be sure to enter your horses for this!  Our club has already been signed up and I would love to see you all participate.  This is an excellent way to help bring clubs and members together and to have fun and win money.  It is free for you to enter and you may enter up to 3 horses total, with one club per horse.

Breeder Directory

I realize that there is a large breeder directory floating around.  However, I don't believe it can be linked in club pages but I may be mistaken.  If anyone wants to be placed on the Club Page portion of the breeder directory, please let me know.

Form:
Breeder Directory

Name and player number:

What you breed for: Discipline/Stats/Color

July Contests:

Which contests would you like to see run in July?  I will be setting these contests up next week but would like input before I just choose.  We will be doing a member/horse of the month contest for sure.

Options:

Foal Stat Contest

Foundation Stat Contest (Start with a 3 year old instead of a foal)

Breeding Contest (Trying to breed for specific stats/color/etc)

Other suggestions?

Poll: Registration Requirements

Should we change the current registration requirements?

As it stands now the current requirements are:

Foundation Horses

  • 0-3 - 100

  • 3-6 - 200

  • 6-9 - 300

  • 9-12 - 400

  • 12-15 - 500

  • 15+ - 600+

  • Horses with average conformation below 50 will be automatically rejected.

  • Your horse must NOT be named after a famous horse - names such as Secretariat, Eclipse, etc. will be rejected outright!

  • Pedigree Horses
  • 0-3 - 300

  • 3-6 - 400

  • 6-9 - 500

  • 9-12 - 600

  • 12-15 - 700

  • 15+ - 800+

  • Horses with average conformation below 50 will be automatically rejected.

  • Your horse must NOT be named after a famous horse - names such as Secretariat, Eclipse, etc. will be rejected outright!

  • Stud Book
  • Foundation: Over 600 stats, no more than 10 foals at the time of registration.

  • Pedigree: Over 800 stats, no more than 10 foals at the time of registration.

  • Must not be named after a famous horse.

  • Conformation over 50 for foundations, 55 for pedigrees. - I temporarily changed this to 55 for pedigrees due to a total lack of entries.  I am willing to change it back if the club believes we should.

  • Stallions with over 10 foals will be automatically rejected.

  • Should the requirements be more strict?  Should they stay as they are?  Should stats be based on Age?  Should we keep the naming requirement?

Please let me know what you think!  I'm wanting to keep the "Horses with average conformation below 50 will be automatically rejected." rule just because we should keep quality up.  However, if you think we should raise the conformation or have a good reason to lower it please let me know!

    Thoroughbred Information:

As some of you may have noticed, there is a spot for information on the Thoroughbred Breed on our club page.  I would absolutely love to fill this in in the next week.  If any of you are particularly interested in helping with this, please feel free to send me a message.  I will be more than happy to compensate anyone for their time.

    *IMPORTANT* Club Changes:

As many of you probably have seen, Clubs are going to be changing next month.  The person running in July, will be running to OWN the club.  I am willing to run and to keep the club going if the rest of you are okay with me staying on.  This is going to be a bit more permanent though so I wanted to ask/get feedback before hand.  Of course if I were to stay on, I would definitely be appointing admins to help out.

To those of you still with me, Thank you!  I know that this was a really long post and I appreciate you reading it through.  In order to encourage discussion, I will have some prizes for those who participate in this discussion.  Everyone who makes at least one thorough discussion post will be entered to win a grand Prize of 5 credits.

    Those entered to win credits:

    Prize: 5 credits

I disagree with the rule that horses named after a famous horse are automatically rejected. First, I see nothing wrong with allowing horses with famous names into the registry. Was it really ever a problem in the first place that there were multiple horses named Secretariat or Seabiscuit? Even if there are a few, all ID numbers are unique, so I don't think it'd be confusing. Names can also be changed at any time, even once they're added to the registry, so I think it's rather silly to exclude them for something that can be changed so easily. My other reason for getting rid of this rule is that not everyone is aware of the names of famous horses. I didn't know there was a famous horse named Eclipse, for example - I might've named a horse that because I think solar or lunar eclipses are beautiful. I at least hope that if you ever have rejected a horse due to its name, that you told the owner why it was rejected. The horse may have met all other requirements but the owner didn't realize that they had named their horse after a famous one. Then, of course, there's the problem of how famous is famous enough to be breaking this rule. There's no real way to decide that.

It's not a super big deal either way, but I thought I'd give you my input. xD

Thank you!  Yeah, I'm not sure why the rule was ever put in place really.  I think there has only been one horse rejected because of this rule and I think I let the owner know.  Honestly there are a lot of famous horses I wouldn't even know to check.  I really only know some of the big racing ones and a few others here and there.  Also, as you mentioned, it's not difficult to change the name after.  I figured I'd ask before changing though, just in case there's something I'm unaware of.

I'm going to go through this one a paragraph at a time lol

July Club Championships I already entered this one :)

    as for the breeder directory.

    Form:
    Breeder Directory
Player Name and Number: Danzy007 #80906
What you Breed for: Cream (Colour. Crcr/ CrCr) Stats and Confirmation

    Registration Requirements

I think the requirements are fair. I can understand why the name rule was implemented. I'm pretty sure I remember when that came into place. There were so many TBs named after famous race horses it was crazy. Its not seen so much now though with people thinking a little more for themselves on names so I'm not sure its a needed rule any more, the point of it has become moot.

    Club contests

I would love to see any of those contests run. The breeding one a little more than the others, mostly because I haven't seen it done before. I would like to see and art contest for those interested but that is just me.

Thank you for your feedback!  I know I had a lot up there to answer lol.  I'm not 100% sure how I'll be running the breeding one to be honest, as I've never seen it done either.  But I have a few ideas floating around that could work.  Having a few different breeding goals to try to get people to meet.  -Certain color/stats/conformation.  I'd probably have a few categories so that no one was really left out.  I know there are players with a lot of horses that could give them advantages vs though who have maybe just started on their lines.

Not a fan of the naming requirement, not everyone follows thoroughbred racing enough to know every single famous racehorse. Also, how much would you be checking for it anyways? Some racehorses could be considered famous if they're black type stakes winners which most of the public has probably never heard of. I,e The racehorse "You"-highly doubt anyone knows about her, however she participated in the breeders cup juv fillies in 01 and one multiple graded stakes. I literally just went to Equibase to prove a point and find a black type graded winner and/or one of less caliber but could still be arguably "famous".

her run in the 01 juv fillies

You in perhaps one of the best races i've ever seen; winning the G1 Test Stakes by a nose, literally
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u03E155wcIE
^Also if anyone ever watched TVG a few years ago they had their nose to nose duel as a commercial for a while
But I can't find a wikipedia article about her, so where does that put her in terms of fame? Multiple grade one wins
Also on the fence about the confo rules, some stores generate them in the 40's and to reject a potentially quality horse because of something auto generated? seems silly to me. Perhaps 50+ for lined ones and no restrictions on stores?

    Breeder Directory
Name and player number: Sonoma #66116
What you breed for: High conformation and clean-lined racing stock with low non-specialty stats

    Contests
I'd be interested in any sort of "Raise a Horse" contest. Breeding contests get challenging because it's a matter of having stock aligned. Plus, there are so many genetic tweaks now that it seems to me that with some investment of credits it could be easy to produce the exact horse that's aimed for.

    Registration Requirements
As others have stated, I don't think the naming requirement is necessary. I'm not familiar enough with racing to know if I've duplicated something, plus Zest made a great point about even being able to define "fame". Plus, not everyone is breeding racers. If we're going to limit there, we'd also need to reject "famous TB" names from other disciplines.

I think the stat requirements should be upped, specifically on foundation horses. The way it stands now, you can buy a horse straight from the EC and register it. I don't think that promotes any sort of dedication or work.

As for the stud book, I don't think the cap on foals is necessary. I know a lot of people feel a horse is "overbred" if it has over three foals, but what folks do with their lines is their discretion. I think if a horse is throwing great colors or stats that are in line with your goals, you should decide how and when to make use of that.

Happy to elaborate on anything if there are questions.

I might be the oddball here but I'd like to see a slightly better age split for the required stats, I tend of over analyze things so I haven't registered any of my new foundations since they could either be in the 0-3 100 stat minimum range or the 3-6 200 stat minimum range.  I wouldn't increase the stat requirements for foundations personally but I could see an increase for pedigree horses to help encourage quality and growth.  I'm still getting back into the swing of the game so these are just effectively a "newbies" thoughts.

Perhaps something like this for age brackets
    Foundation Horses

  • 0-2 - 100

  • 3-5 - 200

  • 6-8 - 300

  • 9-11 - 400

  • 12-14 - 500

  • 15+ - 600+

  • Pedigree Horses
  • 0-2 - 300

  • 3-5 - 400

  • 6-8 - 500

  • 9-11 - 600

  • 12-14 - 700

  • 15+ - 800+

I've just realised re. the no horse named after a famous horse/racehorse requirement, I actually have one named after a current racehorse (Across The Bay - RL a steeplechaser/NH horse, on EV Across The Bay is out of Little Bay lol)

I think if you're going to apply the rule, it should be only if there are say 8 Secretariats or Red Rums or American Pharoah's trying to be registered at one time.

If you wanted to run it more like the TB Registries in RL, you could implement some of their naming rules, but those would be really hard to bring in lol

    Hello All,

I apologize for the VERY late drawing of this.  I ended up having to take an unexpected and unannounced hiatus and have only just been able to return.

Congratulations to Danzy007 for winning the drawing!  I have sent over your prize.  I know that I am no longer the president, but I hope that the club will still be able to utilize this information.

When did the overall conformation go up to 60 for registration? I just adopted a string of foundies with 50+ conformation  (few weeks ago and have been showing the to get the points) only to find this has changed. Not too thrilled to learn this as they met the requirements before the change? Feels like a waste of time, effort and money...
