Best YouTube videos for learning about horses

#103592 Posted on 2017-05-04 06:13:56

Specifically training and English riding. I already have a pretty good understanding, but I work at a dude ranch right now where my opportunities to continue furthering my English riding or really just riding are limited because we just do trail rides.

Your opinions on why you like certain trainers and videos would be appreciated. I do not plan to use this info to train a horse but little exercises I could do on the trail I might try.

Thanks guys :]

I wrote out a huge blurb, but it's more geared towards training a horse. However, the channel and trainer are GREAT if you want to learn how to get a horse moving correctly instead of this horrid modern way of riding with overbent necks, hollow backs, and short-striding legs... If you want, you can check it out: Art2Ride/Will Faerber

The Willing Equine is a developing channel, but Adele is an amazing horsewoman with some good info.
Rick Gore is also pretty good for learning about how horses work, but his rants about bits can be REALLY annoying.
Dressage Mastery TV is great for learning about dressage
I would also recommend checking out books about horses from your local library
CKR Training is GREAT! I really need to watch more of her videos. They're very informative on almost EVERYTHING horse.
Little Red Cowgirl is pretty good if you want to know about starting horses
Padmavideo has some great information, The Willing Equine refers her viewers to this channel sometimes.

There are probably a ton more, but theses are the channels that I know fairly well. Good luck. Also, if you're comfortable, you can practice riding on the trails.

If your aiming towards dressage work, I'd suggest dressage hub. She videos snippets of clinicians teaching specific things.

IMO I am not a fan of Dressage Mastery TV. I feel like Natasha understands more of the theory, but she rides with a heavy leg (which doesn't work for me and my horse).

Definitely check out Buck Brannaman and Warwick Schiller for training horses.

Evention TV does give some help with jumping and finding distances (although they are geared towards eventing).

Any and all clinics by George Morris.

Honestly, and of the bigger horse shows that are posted on youtube are good to watch (with jumping/hunter classes). It's nice to compare how the judges place and how the riders ride.

Just remember even though you are just trail riding, you can still work on your position in general (posture, leg position etc). Most western horses (in my experience) will to a bit of a working, English style trot so you could probably still work on posting if you shorten your stirrups (with exercises like post two beats, sit two beats).

How To Saddle A Horse

Okay, it's not the best made video, but I made it as my final project for a class in Fall 2015, and it got a A +. :)

EventionTV and HorseRadar are awesome for specifically jumping, but also other exercises.
RideSmart is a lesser known channel, but has awesome tips.
YourRidingSuccess has awesome dressage and flatwork ideas.
SprinkleOfPaige has tips on groundwork, jumping, dressage, flatwork and grooming/bathing.
CRKtraining is one of my favorites! They have everything you need to know in English riding.
ridingrightvideo is an old channel, but has useful tips on the rider's seat.

Hope this helps! I personally think HorseRadar, SprinkleOfPaige, and CRKtraining are the best and clearest to understand.
